Pharmaceutical Waste from Businesses
Medicine disposal provided for residents
Pharmaceutical waste generated by businesses, for example, dental offices, veterinary and medical clinics and schools, cannot dispose of its pharmaceutical waste using a medicine drop-off location or mail-back service. These services are provided for residents disposing of household medicines.
Washington State Department of Ecology
Pharmaceutical waste generated by a business can designate as “dangerous waste” under state laws or as “hazardous waste” by the federal government under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Designation determines what dangerous waste rules and policies must be followed.
The Washington State Department of Ecology provides information and resources on how to manage and dispose of pharmaceutical waste generated by businesses. More information is available at: WADOE guidance for managing common pharmaceutical waste
